Background

Cvent, an events, hospitality, and meetings management SaaS company, was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With the cancellation of in-person events, one of Cvent’s primary revenue streams was at risk. While the team was initially focused on developing a native mobile app to assist attendees at in-person conferences and gatherings, the pandemic forced us to swiftly pivot to designing a completely new virtual events platform.

I designed social features adapted for virtual, hybrid, and in-person event attendees for a native mobile app and web-based platform.

Challenges

Navigating Legacy Software

Cvent’s legacy event management software presented challenges and limitations in our quest to design a modern virtual events platform. Additionally, we had to adapt Cvent’s existing design system, originally intended for planner-facing products, to suit an attendee-facing product. This often required creating custom components within tight timelines.

Designing for Flexibility and White Labeling

Event planners could customize the apps based on their company and event branding, meaning that the design needed to be flexible enough to accommodate a variety of color schemes.

Responsibilities

My team was responsible for creating a seamless experience across three key areas:

I focused on creating engaging social features for both the mobile app and the virtual events platform, contributing to the design system, and designing illustrations and iconography across the three applications.
